Overview
Learners create a presentation about themselves and share this content with the group.
Essentials in the Activity
Learners individually or with a peer create presentations to succinctly share facts about themselves with peers and educators. In deciding how they want to present facts and viewing peers’ presentations, learners become more familiar with the presentation software’s features and the different modes they can use to communicate information. The process of creating and listening to presentations enhances their self and social awareness. Those who work with a peer build relationship skills.
Goals and Outcomes
Goal: Learners feel comfortable navigating and operating the digital presentation tool (e.g., Keynote, Power Point) that will be used for their game pitch and become more familiar with each other.
Outcomes: Learners develop their media literacy and digital skills as well as improve their presentation and social-emotional skills. Specifically, they build their experience with digital presentation software and learn the process for finding and using licensed images.
Materials
Tablet or laptop, presentation software (e.g., Keynote, Power Point) or other software learners can access (e.g., word processing), projector and white screen optional, video conferencing tool optional
Preparation
Familiarize yourself with the software and Creative Commons. Create an example to show learners how to attribute images in a presentation. Examples of attribution can be found at Creative Commons’ website and Flickr.
Implementation and Completion
Show learners the interface and features of software and how to add content. Then demonstrate how to locate images using Creative Commons and incorporate images with correct attributions. Either have learners complete the activity individually or with a partner.
If with a partner, ask learners to identify someone they do not know to work with and discover more information about them through dialogue. Encourage learners to ask their partner questions and answer the questions their partners pose. If partners do not want to answer specific questions, work with the pairs to generate more questions. Based on the information shared, tell learners to decide and agree upon 3-5 facts to include in the presentation. Emphasize the importance of each person approving of the information shared. It may be helpful to provide learners with suggested talking points. If learners complete this activity individually, learners add 3 -5 facts about themselves to share with the group in the software.
After learners have completed their presentations, demonstrate how to present their pitch to the group (e.g., sharing screen on video conferencing, plugs and settings for projectors, etc.).
